The 12th Sir Hugh Wontner Lecture was hosted by the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, University of Strathclyde on Wednesday 4th March. The 2009 lecture was given by Stephen Carter OBE and was titled: "Hospitality - a people and profit thing."

Stephen Carter is recognised in the hospitality industry as the consummate host and is a passionate hotelier and believer in his people. Since graduating from the University of Surrey, his roles have taken him to most major cities and resort areas in Scotland and he is currently at the Cameron House Resort on Loch Lomond.

Stephen has mentored several industry leaders including Robert Cook of Malmaison and Hotel du Vin, and Douglas Waddell of Handpicked Hotels. He relishes the opportunities offered in business turnarounds where his leadership skills can build high achieving teams developing truly successful businesses alive to the needs of guests, local community and team members. He strongly believes in the interaction of the hotel and the community in which it finds itself and that a hotel is only as successful as that local community will allow it to be.

His passion for the business has gained him several prestigious awards, not least The Silver Thistle Award by Visit Scotland for outstanding contribution to Scottish Tourism and The Catey award for Manager of the Year in 2005. In 2007 he was awarded the OBE for services to the Hospitality Industry. Stephen is also Chairman of The Hospitality Industry Trust Scotland, assisting people to achieve their potential within the Scottish Hospitality Industry.

The Lecture Series

This lecture series was conceived as a way of recognising the many forms of support of the Savoy Educational Trust for the work of the Department of Hospitality & Tourism Management, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. It is named after Sir Hugh Wontner, once Managing Director of The Savoy Hotel in London, and one of the founders of the Trust. The lecture series is designed to bring together industry leaders, academics, and students of hospitality for a stimulating and interactive gathering. The first Sir Hugh Wontner Lecture was given in 1998.
